Reviews of the CD

You will never know how pleased I am to welcome Dulaman to Woven Wheat Whispers. Along side Emma and The Professor, they are one of the most exciting folk bands I've seen live in recent years and this album was like a breath of fresh air when I first heard it a couple of years ago. Reviews often bandy around terms such as "fresh", "vital" and "dynamic" when commenting on new discoveries, but more often than not the album is nothing of the sort. Happily though, all the above terms are more than suitable when describing the music on "Four Years in November." Drawing on influences from Bluegrass, tradition folk and even Celtic pop they have managed to create a debut album that encompasses the strengths of all these genres without ever falling into the trap of sounding like like mere copyists or a bland fusion that has an eye on the pop charts.

fRoots magazine November 2005

"Talented young acoustic four-piece (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, double bass) explore the folk-bluegrass crossover groove with flair and invention. Attractively snappy rendition of old-timey-inspired tunes sit alongside more introspective self-penned songs, some of which verge rather closer to pop and not all of which are equally distinguished".

(replying to an Email to see if he had managed to squeeze in the time in his very busy schedule to listen to the CD)

yes, I did. .. nice refreshing diversion from the nashville "norm" of slammin' snares and twangin' tele's. I suppose any praise or critisism in detail, ought to come from someone who has listened to it more than once!   I would call it a splendid effort- featuring many of the sounds that will soon rock the western world, and send big record exec's scrambling to find young bands with mando/banjo/fiddle/wordsyoucanhear/ production sensibilities.

Just do me one favor.   when I do see you on TV or at telluride, please don't have one of those stick basses. make them pay to fly the upright. or at least put some foam under the bridge, if you get stuck without the old doghouse.

best of luck .... Stuart

I agree with Stuart - it's a good effort - well thought out and  flush with positive energy.
Good luck!      -Mark

The long awaited CD by this young quartet has arrived and as we have watched these very talented musicians develop over the years it is particularly gratifying to hear the result of their first ever CD. Produced by Iain Reddy and assisted by Dave Healey the sound production is superb and highlights the many talents of this band. The guitar and fiddle playing of  James Dewdney and Anna Kelly are excellent and with a  solid driving bass from Eleanor Cross they provide the perfect foil for David Pickering’s  song writing. There are two traditional instrumental tracks and the remaining eight are all self-penned songs. Johnny Hulme guests on banjo on the fine ‘Red Curtains’, but it is the song writing of David Pickering that for me makes this CD what it is IE unique. There is some seriously good songs here that would grace any of the modern contemporary music compositions  that comes from the USA from bands such as ‘Nickel Creek’ and I hope that this CD will provide a stepping stone onto bigger and better things in the future. This band can only improve and they are already playing way beyond their young years and I am sure that ‘Dulaman’ fans young and old alike will appreciate this fine CD ‘Four Years in November’.

"In a word? Excellent! Dulaman's Four Years in November is an inspirational piece of work and beautifully presented, too. After a quick listen through to select tracks to play on air I ended thinking "any of these would be good". So, over a few weeks I shall probably play the whole lot. Personally, I prefer the instrumentals over the songs. They are lively, fast and rhythmical - and they make a good opener for the programme - but that's not to say the songs aren't good, well written and well sung.

Genevieve Tudor - BBC Radio Shropshire

I got some very enthusiastic response regarding the Dulaman tracks that I played, and I've already got requests to play more of your music on upcoming shows.

All the best to the band - Kelly.

Dulaman is a tight little band that shows a lot of promise. They have a curious mix of musical styles, and as such it is hard to define exactly to whom the band is going to appeal to most. For on the one hand they are a Bluegrass band and on the other they are a young contemporary folk band. On a personal note, I applaud what they are trying to do, and I can’t fault their musicianship. I rate this one * * * * * * 26/06/04.
